Pilates at the RSI Clinic
Pilates (pronounced puh-LAH-teez) is a full body conditioning
program comprised of a series of controlled movements performed on a mat
and with specific apparatus.
Developed in the 1920s by Joseph H. Pilates, Pilates is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength for the total body. It contains elements of both Eastern and Western philosophies of physical and mental conditioning.
Pilates is not just exercise. It is a series of controlled movements engaging body and mind, performed on specifically designed exercise apparatus and supervised by a trained physiotherapist and a movement therapist. Control of body alignment and correct breathing through concentration are the basis of efficient exercise with reduced repetition. All muscle groups are involved however there is a focus on those that provide postural stabilization (the abdomen and mid back). Pilates can increase flexibility, build strength and tone muscles without adding bulk.
The RSI Clinic Pilates Program provides a way to safely strengthen the muscles after a repetitive strain injury. With a focus on postural stabilization and breathing, this method of strengthening provides an effective means of returning to function without further injuring the involved muscles.
Pilates sessions can consist of a group mat class,an individually instructed program, or a combination of both depending on personal needs.
